Blogging using the Postie plugin for WordPress

By in Miscellaneous

This is my first blog entry using the Postie plugin for WordPress which you can read about in more detail here:
After a bit of fiddling and testing and a bit more fiddling, and a bit more testing I have it working!

I don’t think it will fully replace using the wp-admin site or Windows Live Writer I recently downloaded, to write blogs, but I can see, if I don’t have access to a computer, I can easily post to my website by sending an email from my phone.
Postie supports adding images to your blog entry by attaching them to the email, post tags and post categories, and I am sure, an array of other useful features which I am yet to discover! I think the first thing I am going to do is to create an email template with all possible features included in it, which I can use and customize for each post I create in this way.

So far I am pretty impressed

Blogging with Windows Live Writer

By in Miscellaneous

I have been looking for a desktop blog application I can write and upload posts to my blog, without having to log into the admin site online. I decided to try out Windows Live Writer after reading a few reviews on other blog sites and this is my first post using it!
I was a little hesitant at first about installing Windows Live Writer as I thought I would have to sign up to Windows live, and install all the other ‘crud-ware’ like messenger, but thankfully I didn’t!
My webhost, Namesco prevent connection to the default xmlrpc.php file – see previous post for details – but after renaming it on my website, Live Writer allowed me to specify the renamed file and within seconds I was connected.
So far, writing this post has been a breeze so I won’t be uninstalling it just yet!

WordPress for Android HTTP status code: 404 connection error

By in Knowledge Base, Scripting

This is a self-hosted WordPress powered blog I have hosted with Namesco.

I was excited at the prospect of being able to update the blog through the WordPress Android app, but after installing it on my phone I was frustrated that I kept getting an “HTTP status code: 404 error” and simply couldn’t connect!

After a bit of investigation on forums I found that this error is thrown up if the app cannot connect to the xmlrpc.php file, which is the file that is used to post directly to your blog.

Contacting Namesco I was informed that for security reasons, they block access to any file named xmlrpc.php as this has been a target for hackers and spamming groups, their knowledge based article on this subject can be found here.

If you wish to use the XMLRPC sercive, they recommend just renaming the xmlrpc.php file to something else,  but unfortunately, at this time, the Android app does not support the feature to enable you to point to a different file name!

I have my fingers crossed that a future release of the WordWress Android app will include this feature, but for now I have to make do with updating my blog through the browser.
